Smoke control for IKEA’s new Exeter branch

Client - IKEA

Overview:

Whenever the Swedish giant IKEA opens a new store it’s a newsworthy event. Never more so than when excited customers travelled up to 100 miles to the opening of their new Exeter branch in anticipation of bagging some Scandi design excellence. Unfortunately, this keen group of customers didn’t get the memo that the opening had been delayed as building was unavoidably halted due to the arrival of ‘the beast from the east’. After a delay of 10 days IKEA Exeter officially opened the doors to their first Devon Branch, too even greater anticipation and excitement from shoppers. Adexsi UK were proud to provide our expertise, design knowledge and world leading products to this high-profile project on time as planned. IKEA invested £80m in the new site which covers an impressive 29,000 square metres. The store features room sets, a crèche, restaurant, bistro, a Changing Places toilet facility and underground car park with over 1,000 spaces. The challenge was to provide fully compliant and effective ventilation and fire prevention solutions to the new build which ensures the safety and comfort of staff and visitors to the store.

Outcome:

Adexsi UK worked collaboratively on the project with their client Air Design Systems (ADS), who specialise in the design, installation and commissioning of ventilation systems. ADS commissioned us to deliver the ventilation products that best met the complex safety and ventilation demands of the multi-functional store. We also worked closely with their customer Briggs and Forrester, a leading player in the building services market. Together we used our combined expertise, experience and project management skills to deliver unbeatable fire safety and building comfort solutions. Our team of experts identified all legislative demands and building regulations that applied to the project. We identified the optimum mix of components and products from our portfolio to deliver a system that provides efficient ventilation and effectively extracts dangerous smoke if a fire were to break out. In total we supplied 48 Smoke Ventilation Louvres to the IKEA store. These included CErtilam Roof Louvre Insulated, CErtilam Wall Louvre and CErtilux Roof Louvre Polycarbonate. These products were the perfect choice for the commercial structure. Each of these products are a complete NSHEV solution (Natural Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilator). The different dimensions allowed for tailor-made manufacturing which fitted with the overall building design. The products aesthetics allowed them to be integrated seamlessly into the build in a visually pleasing manner. All products supplied were tested to BSEN12101-2 and are CE certified to ensure ventilation and smoke solutions that IKEA can trust to protect their staff and customers.
